Introduction
This guide, developed by BLC Bank, aims to raise your awareness of the risks and threats associated with daily email communications. It outlines essential precautions, especially concerning financial transactions and transfers.
Common Threats and Solutions
Fraudulent Emails (Scams and Phishing)
Fraudulent emails are widespread. Criminals send fake emails that closely mimic legitimate ones you expect to receive. They use false statements and impersonate trustworthy entities to trick you into:
Divulging personal information.
Stealing your online banking or other sensitive credentials.
Infecting your machine with malicious software.
Transferring money to a fraudster's account.
Phishing Red Flags (Checklist)
Always check received emails for the following criteria:
Impersonation and Intimidation: Emails pretending to be from a high authority to pressure you into immediate action.
"Too Good to Be True" Offers: Claims of prizes, high-profit business deals, or unexpected inheritances.
Malicious Links: Links to fraudulent internet banking websites or other sensitive sites pushing you to enter credentials.
Malicious Attachments: Attachments from unrecognized senders that you were not expecting.
Suspicious Language: Informal slang (“Hi friend”), spelling mistakes, emoticons, or requests for sensitive and personal information.
Urgency: Unexpected emails flagged as urgent demanding immediate action.
Supplier Changes: A supplier suddenly changing their bank account details, especially to a foreign country.
Responding to Suspicious Emails
If any of the above criteria are met or you feel suspicious, do not open attachments, click links, or reply.
Delete the email immediately.
